MeADE Business Meeting Minutes 10/21/07

7 pm Dinner Meeting

1. Welcome and introductions. Gifts given to past officers Theresa, Rena and Cindy.

2. President's Report - Goals:

    a) Use website to put personal info./ questions /job postings

    b) Logo for MeADE being developed by R. Pelletier.

    c) We need volunteers to work on committees.  Conference calls can be used to make meeting easier.

    d) May be able to teleconferencing in the future.

3) Future Meeting dates:  1/16/08 - phone conference call 7 pm

                                       7/16/08 -    "            "            "      "

                                       4/11/07 - Face to face meeting in Augusta. Fri. 3 pm - 8 pm

                                        Annual Meeting - Oct. 19 - 21st 2008 at the Eastland Park Hotel, Portland, Me.

    We may be able to reach more nursing and RD students by offering a student rate.

4) Last year's minutes were accepted unanimously.

5) Committee Reports:

    a) Strategic Planning - Jen Courtois and Laura Gordon are co-chairs.

    b) Nominating - Cindy Young is chair.  Working to keep people involved in our chapter is vital.

    c) Membership - Lou Pellitier is chair for now. Ideas needed on how best to organize new members and renewals.  National AADE has changed renewal dates.

        MeADE will change to coincide with national.

    d) Legislative Comm.  Roberta Damron is chair.  On the Amer. Diabetes Assoc. website there is a link where you can go and find out what is happening legislatively.

        Maine Dietetic Assoc. also offers insight on bills and legislative motions.  Letter and testimony are vital to affect change. Roberta stressed that we need to be proactive.

        A link will be added to website.

    e) Communications and Public Relations - Rena Gels Birch is chair.  Comm. has several goals.  One is to create a flyer about the role of the diabetes educator.

        Initial flyer is being revised with collaboration with Kris Scutchfield.  Flyers could be used at health fairs, etc.

        We would like to make the website more useful to patients.   There is also a flyer to encourage CDE's to join MeADE.  People can go online to get registration

        form.  Barbara Smith is updating the website.

     f) Bylaws Comm. - Sandra Barth is co-chair. Primary goal is to align our bylaws with National's.  Will try to complete by the Spring.

     g) Regional Reps. - having regions is a way for members to get together between national meetings and share ideas.  Our membership form will start to ask county of

         residence to make it easier to know who lives in which reason.   Mary Fleming in rep. for the North Central Region.

6) A motion was approved to charge $30 for posting a job on the website for 60 days.

7) Cindy Young has taken a position as Secretary for National AADE.

8) Next years conference is already being planned.  Title is "Future Frontiers of Diabetes Education".  Absracts are being accepted of people interested in presenting at the conference.  Anyone with ideas for speakers should get in touch with the strategic planning comm.

9) The national AADE Conf. is in Washington DC in Aug. 2008.  Registration is available on line.

10)  National Diabetes Day is Nov.14th.   Theme is "Year of the Child" .  There will be a town hall type meeting at the Augusta National Guard Armory.  People will get

      up and speak about what it's like to live with diabetes.   Any patients who would like to speak should contact Maria, the facilitator for the Augusta Support Group.

      After the first hour of scheduled speakers, there will be open mike.  People can sent posters, etc. for display.

11) Louise went to the ADA meeting and listened to a talk about raising money for the "Life of a Child", established by the International Diabetes Federation.  They help children in 14 countries by providing insulin, clinical care, testing and education supplies.  The proceeds from our raffle will be used for this cause.
